The short answer

Decide before you arrive, say no early and repeat the same short answer: 'We're not buying today.' You don't need to give reasons, and declining doesn't cost you the vacation package. If you do sign, state law lets you cancel in writing: 10 calendar days in Florida, 5 in Nevada, 5 in South Carolina (not counting a Sunday fifth day), and 10 in Tennessee, or 15 if you didn't inspect the property first.

The hardest part of a timeshare presentation is the last 20 minutes, when the offer arrives and the price may start to drop. Decide what you'll say before you get there and it takes one sentence.

Up nextThe 7 lines, then the backup plan if you sign.

Before you walk in

The FTC advises researching the developer beforehand and not acting quickly or under pressure. Agree with your partner on the answer in the car.

7 lines that work

Say it, then repeat it
  • We're not buying today.
  • We decided before we came.
  • We don't make financial decisions on the same day.
  • No, thank you. Can we finish the tour?
  • That price doesn't change our answer.
  • We'd like to leave now, please.
  • Please note that we declined.
Reasons invite counteroffers. A repeated no ends the conversation.

If you signed anyway
