The short answer

To qualify for a Westgate preview package you must be a US citizen who is married, engaged, cohabiting or a single woman; have $50,000+ household income ($60,000 for Las Vegas) and a FICO score of 600+; meet the destination's age rule (one partner 25–70 in Orlando, Branson, Cocoa Beach and Williamsburg; both 27–70 in Gatlinburg, Myrtle Beach and Las Vegas; single women 28–70); and attend a 90-minute tour after breakfast. Skipping the tour can cost up to $500 plus the retail value of any included tickets.

Westgate's $79–$399 packages are steeply discounted resort vacations, often with park tickets or a Visa gift card included. The trade is one 90-minute presentation, with no obligation to buy. Know the rules below and the trip goes the way it should. Below is each rule from Westgate's Terms & Conditions with the state laws that protect you if you do buy.

Up nextThe one rule that keeps a $99 trip at $99.

Rules change by destination. Skip the reading and see if you qualify → It takes 30 seconds.

The five-second check: who qualifies

RuleRequirement
CitizenshipUS citizen
RelationshipMarried, engaged or cohabiting couple, or a single woman
Household income$50,000+ ($60,000+ for Las Vegas)
CreditFICO 600+
PaymentA major credit card (no prepaid or debit-only cards)
Check-in age21 (18 in Las Vegas)

The credit rule trips up more people than the income rule. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau notes most credit scores run from 300 to 850. Westgate's bar is 600, so check your score before you book.

Age rules change by destination

DestinationCouplesSingle women
Orlando, Branson, Cocoa Beach, WilliamsburgOne partner 25–7028–70
Gatlinburg, Myrtle Beach, Las VegasBoth partners 27–7028–70

Couples must attend the tour together. A 26-year-old couple can book Orlando but not Gatlinburg, which is an easy mistake to make when the deals look so similar.

Six ways to get disqualified

You're excluded if any of these apply
  • You live within 60 miles of the resort
  • You already own with Westgate
  • You toured a Westgate property in the last 6 months
  • You've used more than 2 Westgate promotional packages
  • You're traveling with 3 or more couples
  • The trip is for a wedding, convention, reunion or party

What happens in the 90 minutes

Per Westgate's tour qualifications page, you get a complimentary hot breakfast, then a presentation on vacation ownership with no obligation to buy. Expect a salesperson, a property tour and at least one price offer, sometimes followed by a second, lower one.

The FTC's guidance on timeshare presentations is the best prep you can do: don't act under pressure, ask why today's price is "only" available today, get every promise in writing, and take the paperwork home before deciding.

The deal is the room and the tickets. The presentation is the price you pay for them, so pay it, enjoy the trip and decide about ownership later.

The one rule that protects your price

The other line items to plan for:

  • Travel window: within 6 months of purchase
  • Changes within 7 days of arrival: $25 fee
  • Deposit: a refundable security deposit is held on your card at check-in
  • Taxes: not included in the advertised price

The easy fix is to book the tour for your first full morning. It's out of the way early, and it's much harder to miss by accident.

If you buy: your cancellation window by state

Every state where Westgate sells gives buyers a legal right to cancel. Cancel in writing, and send it by certified mail with a return receipt so you have proof.
